Not sure how to diagnose your scalp condition? Here's what to look out for when trying to distinguish if you have either dandruff or a dry scalp.
Diagnosing dry scalp
A dry scalp occurs when the scalp does not have enough oil to lubricate the skin. People with a dry scalp tend to have dry hair too. This is due to the lack of oil being produced in the scalp - it cannot travel through the strands because of the shortage.
The common causes for dry scalp:
- Poor diet
- Excessive sun exposure
- Over-washing
- Harsh weather conditions
- Low water intake
Diagnosing dandruff
Dandruff occurs when the fungal yeast Malassezia causes an imbalance in the scalp by consuming 1 part of the sebum structure. When skin cells attempt to heal the breach they overproduce grease. This is what gives those with dandruff large oily flakes.
The common causes for dry scalp:
- Stress
- Oily scalp
- Under-washing
- Sensitivity to hair care products
- Hormonal changes
