Although we are seeing a change in the mainstream media with regards to celebrities, influencers and the general public challenging westernised beauty ideals, it is still hard to navigate content surrounding natural hair. Luckily, here at Flora & Curl, we are constantly on the look for the latest hairstyles for all curl types with the addition of tips and tricks to help those textured tresses truly flourish! So, sit back and relax – take a look at our most-loved hairstyles from some of our faves including Letitia Wright and Lizzo (to name a couple)!
Tress-stretch
Michaela Coel embraces her textured tresses by stretching her fro out to reinforce softness and length.
How to achieve:
Protect coils with our Citrus Superfruit Radiance Oil and use minimal heat from a blow-dryer to stretch out sections of the hair. Use your hands to gently pull these sections outwards to create this sensational stretched effect! Finish off with a light spritz of our Rose Water Curl Mist to keep those kinks hydrated.
Cotton candy dreaming
We’re absolutely in-love with Lupita Nyong’o’s TWA (teeny weeny afro)! Keep it simple with a cute minimalistic headband.
How to achieve:
Detangle your fro with our dreamy Rose Water Detangling Lotion with either fingers, wide-tooth comb or an afro comb. Bring out the volume by fluffing the roots with one of the recommended tools.
Pro-tip: Why not slick back the front of the hair to really embrace that volume? Simply use a few pumps of our Sweet Hibiscus Gel and finish off with a cute headband!
Slick it back
Letitia Wright is giving us REAL boss vibes with her natural slicked-back look. Super easy to recreate!
How to achieve:
Spritz hair with a few sprays of our Rose Water Curl Mist to make sure you have primed your coils with the most natural blends of plant-powered ingredients to keep those coils hydrated and ready to slick back. Add a few drops of our Citrus Superfruit Radiance Oil and evenly distribute with a detangling brush. Apply a small amount of our Rose Water Detangling Lotion to add hold and prevent fly-aways and gently scrape back the hair with your detangling brush again.
Pro-tip: Once your hair has absorbed most of the product, add a little volume by buffing the back if you feel it is too slicked for you!
Fluffy-fro
Lizzo’s fro has got us in awe. The precision is uncanny and my gosh, we are just loving how fluffy she has got it!
How to achieve: As always with an afro, make sure it is primed with an ultra-hydrating component. We advise using a few spritzes of our Rose Water Curl Mist and using an afro comb to bring out the fro even more. Start combing from the ends to prevent breakage and repeat combing on hydrated hair to get the perfect precision for your fro like Lizzo!
Pro-tip: Not feeling the stretched-out, precise, fluffy-fro? Why not opt for a gorgeous defined fro? Simply follow the above but after using our Hair Mist, add a small amount of our Sweet Hibiscus Curl Activating Lotion and distribute evenly with your afro comb. Repeat this, but with our Sweet Hibiscus Curl Defining Gel and allow for the cast to harden. Once hardened, break the gel cast with a few drops of our Citrus Superfruit Radiance Oil and SOTC. Finally, to add volume, use your afro comb at the roots to fluff!
Mini Bantu-knot
Yes, Michaela Coel is back at it again serving you another chic type 4 hairstyle and we kind of dig it (A LOT). Coel’s mini bantu-knots are not only beautiful for going out, but a perfect protective style too!
How to achieve:
We really want to keep these bantu-knots tight, secure and sealed with a whole lot of hydration and moisture to keep it neat, shiny and of course, healthy!
- First of all, spritz hair down with our Rose Water Curl Mist and distribute with either fingers, detangling brush or a wide-tooth comb.
- Apply a generous amount of our Rose Water Detangling Lotion to your coils and distribute with one of the recommended tools above.
- Now section hair into at least 9 sections for the cutest mini-bantu knots.
- For each section, add a couple of drops of our Citrus Superfruit Radiance Oil and dampen with your Rose Water Curl Mist if needed.
- When working on each section, start to create a mini bantu-knot by splitting the strand in two and making a twist.
- Now roll the twist in a circular motion making sure the end is tucked under the bantu-knot you have just created.
- Simply add a bobby pin to the ends of the mini bantu-knots to make sure it is holding the mini bantu-knot in place.
- Repeat steps 4 – 6 and take a look at those gorgeous swirly mini bantu-knots!
Pro-tip: Don’t like bobby pins? Use mini hair bands, but be careful when you tie the mini bantu-knots as you do not want to manipulate the hair shaft excessively.
